"Do not say, ‘No one will hear my words,’ for ultimately they will be heard." (Avos 2:4)
If you possess information or a personal matter that you truly wish to remain private, do not share it—not even with your closest and most trusted friend. Words, once spoken, take on a life of their own.
Our Sages caution, “Do not speak between the walls, for the walls have ears” (Berachos 8b). This vivid imagery teaches that no place is completely sealed off from the possibility of your words reaching others. A whisper in confidence can, over time, echo beyond its intended boundaries—sometimes through inadvertent slips, other times through deliberate betrayal.
Once a secret leaves your lips, you no longer control its destiny. What begins as a private conversation may end as public knowledge, bringing consequences you neither intended nor imagined.
Today: Treat sensitive matters like priceless treasures: keep them locked away where only you can reach them. Guard your words with the same care you would guard your most valuable possessions. By doing so, you protect your dignity, your relationships, and your peace of mind. (Based on Rabbeinu Yonah on Pirkei Avos)
