The Call of Infinite Love: Vayikra

"And He called to Moshe" (Vayikra 1:1).

The word "called" (Vayikra) is an expression of profound affection. It reveals that HaShem’s love for Moshe Rabbeinu—and by extension, for all of Klal Yisrael—is deep, passionate, and constant. Every Divine communication began with this gentle invitation, establishing Love as the essential bond between the Infinite and the finite.

This "language of calling" is the same used by the Ministering Angels, of whom it is said: "And one called to another." The angels exist in a state of perfect harmony, addressing one another with ultimate respect and love. By using this same language with Moshe, HaShem invited him into that angelic frequency.

As our leader and representative, Moshe received this love on our behalf. When HaShem introduces His commandments with a "call," He is setting the tone for the entire Torah: the Mitzvos are not mere obligations; they are the language of a Relationship.

Whenever you learn Torah, perform a Mitzvah, or stand in prayer, realize that you are not just fulfilling a task—you are responding to an Infinite Call. Open your heart to receive this care, and let that warmth overflow into your speech with your family, friends, and neighbors.

1 Application Exercise: The "Angelic Address"

Rashi notes that "calling" is the language of angels who speak lovingly to one another. This exercise helps you bring that "Angelic Frequency" into your home.

The Practice: The Vayikra Prelude

  1. The Pause: Before you ask a family member, friend, or colleague for something today (even something small), pause for two seconds.
  2. The Internal "Call": Remind yourself that HaShem calls to you with love before every command.
  3. The Angelic Speech: Mirror this by "calling" them by name with a tone of genuine warmth before stating your request. Instead of "Can you pass the salt?" or "Did you finish the report?", try: " [Name]... could you please...?"
  4. The Goal: Listen to the tone of your own voice. Your goal is to make the other person feel "called to" (valued) rather than "commanded at" (used).

Reflective Prompt:

"If an angel were to deliver this message to my spouse or child right now, how would their tone differ from mine?"
