SF - # Experience the Joy of Spiritual Freedom

NEW: See Bottom of Page: "Ask the Rabbi"

"In each generation, every person must view himself as if he personally came out of Egypt."

The Lesson: Spiritual Elevation as True Freedom

The Ma’aseh Nissim (the Maharal of Prague) clarifies a common misconception: this obligation is not about a forced attempt to "remember" a physical event we didn't witness. Rather, the essential redemption was the spiritual liberation that HaShem granted the Jewish soul.

True "Egypt" (Mitzrayim) represents the "narrow straits" of physicality and unholiness. Redemption is the act of HaShem elevating us from that lowly status to one of purity. He honored us by appointing us as His servants and the guardians of His Torah. Therefore, the primary happiness of the Pesach celebration is the recognition that this spiritual freedom is not a past event—it is a current, ongoing gift that HaShem grants us in every single generation.

The Application: Breaking the Bounds of Physicality

To fulfill the requirement of "viewing yourself" as leaving Egypt, you must move from the "Horse" (the physical preparations) to the "Rider" (the soul's experience).

Exercise: The "Rising Soul" Visualization

  1. Identify a Bound: Think of one physical habit or "narrow" character trait (like impatience or worry) that currently limits your spiritual growth.
  2. Envision the Elevation: Close your eyes for one minute and envision HaShem lifting you above that trait. See yourself standing in a place of "Purity and Holiness," where that habit no longer has a hold on you.
  3. Experience the Joy: Feel the specific joy of being a "Servant of HaShem" rather than a servant to your own impulses. Carry this feeling of lightness into your next task, recognizing that you are currently in the process of your own personal Exodus.
