A Mussar Moment: The Inner Altar

Transforming Thought through the Holy Flame

In this week’s Parsha, the Torah commands: "A continuous fire shall burn upon the Altar; it shall not go out" (Leviticus 6:6).

The Sefas Emes teaches that this is not merely an ancient historical requirement, but a living reality within the heart of every Jew. We possess an inner "spiritual flame"—a holy spark of the soul—that has the unique power to annul and neutralize negative thoughts.

How is this flame kindled? It is fueled by Hakaras HaTov (recognition of the good). By deeply reflecting on the constant, unabated kindness that HaShem showers upon every member of Klal Yisrael—even during times of great challenge—our hearts begin to awaken. This warmth of gratitude creates a love so intense that negativity simply cannot survive within its glow.

The Lesson: We have a holy inner flame that holds the power to convert every negative thought into a new level of love for HaShem.

🔥 Practical Application: "The Altar of Gratitude."

When a negative thought (worry, judgment, or spiritual heaviness) enters your mind today, perform this 30-second exercise:

  1. Identify the "Fuel": Recognize the negative thought clearly. Do not fight it; simply observe it.
  2. Strike the Match: Immediately recall one specific kindness HaShem has done for the Jewish people recently (a miracle in Israel, a communal act of Chessed, or the resilience of our people).
  3. Kindle the Flame: Visualize that kindness warming your heart. Say to yourself: "HaShem's love for us is constant; I will use this warmth to transform my worry into trust."
  4. The Burn: Mentally "toss" the negative thought into that warmth and watch it dissolve into the realization: "I am cared for by the King of Kings."
