SF - # Sustaining the Living

NEW: See Bottom of Page: "Ask the Rabbi"

This reflection on Koheles captures the transition from "knowing" to "living." True wisdom isn't a collection of facts; it is the vital energy that sustains existence.

The Vitality of Wisdom: Sustaining the Living

"Wisdom gives life to its possessors." (Koheles 7:12)

We often mistake wisdom for intellectual accumulation—the more a person knows, the "wiser" they are deemed to be. However, Shlomo HaMelech reveals a deeper dimension: Wisdom is a life-force. Divine wisdom is not an abstract theory; it is the active, nurturing power that sustains every heartbeat and every breath of creation.

HaShem’s wisdom is inextricably linked to His Chessed (Kindness). It identifies the most primary need of every creature—the gift of life itself—and provides the means to protect, enrich, and maintain it. To be truly wise, therefore, is to become a "conduit of life" for others. Wisdom is only realized when it is translated into the active preservation of another person’s physical or emotional well-being.

The Lesson: Divine wisdom is not a trophy for the mind, but a tool for the heart. It is the active force that nurtures, protects, and enriches life. When we use our intelligence to solve a friend's problem or offer life-giving encouragement, we are participating in the very Wisdom that keeps the world turning. (Based on Tomer Devorah, Chapter Three)

Practical Application Exercise: The "Oxygen" of Encouragement

The Practice: Today, identify one person in your immediate circle—a family member, colleague, or neighbor—who seems "spiritually or emotionally out of breath" (stressed, discouraged, or overwhelmed).

  • The Reflection: Ask yourself: "What specific piece of 'life-giving' wisdom do I possess that can help them right now?" This could be practical advice, a calming perspective, or simply the wisdom of a listening ear.

  • The Action: Perform one concrete act that lightens their load or restores their spirits. Whether it is helping them solve a technical challenge or offering a sincere word of validation, focus on the intent to "give them life."

  • The Post-Action Thought: After the interaction, notice the shift in their energy. Reflect on how your application of wisdom acted as a "wellspring" that brought immediate relief, mirroring the Divine attribute of Mechayei Chayim (Giver of Life).
