🌳 The Tree of Life & Winning Souls
“The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, and he who wins souls is wise.”
— Mishlei 11:30
📜 The Story(Based on Bava Metzia 85a)
When Rabbi Yehuda HaNasi visited the former home of Rabbi Elazar (son of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai), he asked if any descendants remained. The townspeople revealed that Rabbi Elazar’s son, Yosi, was living there—but had strayed deep into a life of promiscuity.
Rabbi Yehuda sent for Yosi. Understanding that dignity can spark a holy turn, he ordained him and entrusted his education to Rabbi Shimon ben Issi ben Lakonia.
Initially, Yosi still felt pulled to his past, saying after each study session, "I’m going to town." His teacher gently challenged him: 💬 “The Sages made you a Rabbi, and still you say, 'I'm going to town'?”
Step by step, Yosi was transformed. One day, he declared with pure sincerity, "My desire has been extinguished," fully returning to the path of Torah.
💡 The Core Insight
Upon hearing of Yosi’s return, Rabbi Yehuda applied the verse from Mishlei:
- 🍎 “The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life” — refers to Rabbi Yosi, who transformed his life.
- 🏆 “And he who wins souls is wise” — refers to his teacher, Rabbi Shimon, who guided him with gentle dignity.
🌱 Daily ReflectionRather than criticizing or crushing a struggling soul, a wise leader uplifts with honor and vision. Through encouragement and respect, even the most distant heart can be brought home.
