SF - Seeing the Good In You

"Rabbi Yochanan ben Zakai said to his students, "'What is the good path that man should folllow?' Rabbi Eliezer said, 'A good eye." (Avot 2:13) Just as we must look at our friend with "a good eye," so too, we must look at ourselves with a "good eye." In light of knowing our imperfections and character flaws, how do we keep a positive focus when viewing ourselves? We might think that recognizing our shortcomings brings us to know the truth of ourselves. However, the flaws of our personality are the influences of our material aspect, which is external to our essence. Therefore, our flaws are not the truth of who we are. Our essence is our holy and pure soul that HaShem created and instilled within us. The truthful way to view ourselves is to see ourselves as a being of pure goodness. We use our inherent goodness, to look within and cleanse our hearts from the influence of our negative influences. In this way, we learn to define ourselves by the truth of our essence, our good and holy soul.

The true view of man, both ourselves and others, is to know, unequivocally that man's essence is eternally good and holy.

Envision a stalk of wheat. It contains kernels of wheat that will be transformed into bread, the staff of life. Connected to the wheat is a bit of inedible chaff. It is easily removed by tossing the wheat into the wind. The wind carries away the chaff and reveals the perfect stalk of wheat. So too, just as soon as you view yourself as a pure and holy soul, your external flaws will immediately fly away in the winds of truth.

SF - Help Salant Survive!

A scorched, ravaged Beis Medrash, a shattered Kehillah. Huge flames burst out in the dead of night, enveloping the Beis Mussar of Rabbi Yisrael Salanter. Scraps of charred wood are all that remain of the beautiful furniture, and the vast majority of sifrei kodesh, the pride and joy of the Beis Medrash, were tearfully placed in genizah after their letters ascended to Shamayim. A sacred house of Torah, tefillah and mussar was devastated, leaving many bleeding hearts and a fervent yearning to rebuild.

Rabbi Yisrael Salanter’s Mussar Movement continues flourishing and expanding today, inflaming hearts with passion and desire to serve Hashem with love. Twenty years ago, Harav Tzvi Miller shlit”a, founder and Nasi of the Salant Foundation, founded an organization to disseminate divrei mussar to thousands of Yidden worldwide. The inspirational, accessible content, which is presented in pleasant, easy-to-learn format, is disseminated by email every day to thousands of learners around the world. The relevant, compelling lessons arouse many hearts to serve Hashem with ahavah and yirah and to rectify our middos in the sacred tradition of Rabbi Yisrael Salanter. Over the years, Mosdos Salant has translated foundational sifrei mussar into several languages and disseminated them to Jewish communities around the world in order to ingrain mussar in the heart of every Jew.

A decade after the founding of Mosdos Salant, Rav Miller opened Kollel Tiferes Yisrael which is called after the founder of the Mussar Movement Rabbi Yisrael Salanter zt”l. This exceptional Kollel integrates high-level learning of hora’ah and halachah with a special daily seder in mussar, with the goal of cultivating Rabbanim and talmidei chachamim whose knowledge and erudition is matched by outstanding character traits and integrity.

As Ramat Beit Shemesh Gimmel grew and was settled by thousands of Torah families, Rav Miller opened the Beis Medrash and Beis Mussar of Rabbi Yisrael Salanter, which over time, developed into a large, close-knit kehillah of the finest lomdei Torah and yirei Shamayim. The Beis Medrash, which also became home to Kollel Tiferes Yisrael, hosts daily shiurim, chaburos and shmuessen, as well as occasional lectures from famous mashpi’im and baalei mussar who inspire local residents to enhance limud Torah, middos tovos and kedushah.

Several weeks ago, in the middle of the night, a fire broke out on the main floor of the Beis Medrash. Within minutes, a wall of fire enveloped the Beis Medrash; the windows exploded and tongues of fire reached inside, causing terrible damage to the building.

Our beloved Beis Medrash and Beis Mussar, along with hundreds of precious sifrei kodesh were consumed in flames, and our hearts are shattered. How can we stand idly by in the face of such catastrophe? We must reinstate the Kollel, shiurim and chaburos, along with the magnificent kol Torah that pulsates from this sacred place! We must uphold the legacy of Rabbi Yisrael Salanter!

$100,000. It will take us $100,000 to restore the Beis Medrash and Beis Mussar!

Donate now to this worthy cause!

SF - The Wonderful Blessing of Health

Amongst the many wonders of HaShem that are found in the body is the miraculous digestive system. Four divergent powers work harmoniously together to perfectly carry out this process in the proper order. Firstly, HaShem creates the esophagus with the power to safely draw the food into the stomach. Secondly, the stomach retains the food in place so that the digestive process can take place. Thirdly, the stomach dissolves the solid food into a liquid, extracts the good elements from the waste, and sends the nutrition to all parts of the body. Lastly, the body efficiently expels the waste so that it does not endanger our health.

In His unbounded kindness, HaShem oversees the four powers of digestion that our bodies carry our automatically to supply our bodies with good nutrition. If any one of these powers were to fail, G-d forbid, we would be in great danger. How great is the kindness of HaShem, Who performs constant miracles to maintain our health and keep us alive.

Take a moment before or after eating to reflect on the four wonderful powers of digestion. Thank HaShem for providing you with nutritious food, and the miraculous wonder of digestion. Feel the inner joy of recognizing the love and kindness of HaShem, Who safeguards and oversees our life-giving nutrition and the invaluable gift of health.
