Eternal Optimism \ Parashat Chukot D'var Torah: One of the most mystifying questions of the Torah is, what was Moshe's sin that denied him entry to Eretz Yisrael? HaShem told Moshe to "speak to the rock" in order to provide water for Klal Yisrael. Due to the great pressure of the situation Moshe called out to Klal Yisrael, "Listen now, you rebels" and then he hit the rock. As soon as the words escaped his lips, he regretted speaking disrespectfully to Klal Yisrael. However, due to Moshe's great humility he felt that HaShem would not forgive his sin. Moshe's mistake was his lack of faith that HaShem would grant him forgiveness! In light of this, HaShem told Moshe, "Regardless of your improper speech, you should have sanctified Me by believing that I always accept repentance. " Moral: The ultimate trust in HaShem, is to believe that HaShem compassionately accepts every person who returns to Him in repentance. A lack of belief in HaShem's willingness to forgive, is worse than the sin, itself. Application: Reflect on the verse, "HaShem's arm is out-stretched to accept every person who returns to Him." Whenever you ask HaShem for forgiveness, be confident that HaShem will accept you, love you, and totally forgive you. Rejoice in knowing that HaShem has infinite compassion and kindness for you, whenever you return to Him. (Based on the commentary of the Bat Eiyan) Visit the Salant Mussar Library |
