The Three Qualifications of a Jewish Leader \ Parashat Pinchas
D'var Torah: "Take Yehoshuah ben Nun, a man whose spirit is within him"(BaMidbar 27:18). HaShem selected Yehoshuah ben Nun as the leader of Klal Yisrael because he had the three qualifications of leadership, as implied by the phrase, "a man whose spirit is within him." Firstly, Yehoshuah had the sensitivity to understand each man according to his particular mentality and emotional makeup. Secondly, Yehoshuah had the intelligence to give sound counsel to each person who sought his advice. Thirdly, Yehoshuah possessed the inner mastery of himself, concerning both his own desires as well as the strength not to be swayed by people's manipulative influence. Moral: A Jewish leader possesses the golden traits of sensitivity to his fellow man, brilliance in advice, and internal integrity. Yehoshuah attained these three precious traits which elevated him to be the greatest leader of Klal Yisrael, second only to Moshe. Application: Envision Yehoshuah, the leader of Klal Yisrael, preparing the nations to cross the Jordan River and conquer Jericho. See how he relates to each person with care, warmth, and discernment. Note the wise counsel that he gives to each person who consults with him. Reflect on his purity and commitment to always stand up for the truth no matter how trying the circumstance.
