Four Steps to Enhance Your Elul Experience
\ The Wisdom of our Sages

D'var Torah: During the month of Elul, as well as, the Ten days of Repentance between Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur, we recite the Psalm 27. The Psalm begins with the verse: "A psalm of David: 'HaShem is my light and my salvation, I will not fear; HaShem is the strength of my life, I will not be afraid." In this verse King David refers to the three primary fears of man: loss of intelligence, bodily harm, and death. King David perceived that his intelligence -- "my light";  his protection -- "my salvation"; and his very life -- "my life" -- are all supremely secure because they come to him directly from HaShem's supervision. Therefore King David declared, "'HaShem is my light and my salvation, I will not fear; HaShem is the strength of my life, I will not be afraid."  Despite his many trials and tribulations, King David maintained steady faith in HaShem. He was always confident and calm because he clearly perceived that HaShem is the source of his intelligence, protection, and life.

Moral: As we prepare for the High Holy Days of Judgment and Forgiveness, we draw strength and optimism each day from the inspirational words of King David. The more we are aware that our intelligence, protection, and lives are in the hands of HaShem, the more growth and joy we glean from these exceptional and special days.

Application: (1)Review the verse,"A psalm of  David: 'HaShem is my light and my salvation, I will not fear; HaShem is the strength of my life, I will not be afraid.'" (2) Internalize its profoundly positive message. (3) Be confident that HaShem provides you with intelligence, protection, and life. (4) Attain peace of mind and tranquility through believing that HaShem will bless you and all Klal Yisrael with a sweet New Year!
