SF - The Joy of Family \ Rebbe Akiva

The Joy of Family \ Rebbe Akiva

D'var Torah: Rabbi Akiva revealed that the primary Torah principle is, "Love your friend as you love yourself." At first glance, we tend to put this rule into practice by striving to love our friends and neighbors. This is surely commendable and praiseworthy. However there is another application of this great Mitzvah which is just as important. That is, to intend to fulfill the Mitzvah of "Love your friend as you love yourself," right in our home, with our family and loved ones! We have the opportunity to enrich our relationships and accrue endless merits each time we perform the Mitzvah of loving others with our spouse, children, and parents. Moreover, when we relate to our family members while keeping in mind the Mitzvah to "Love your friend like you love yourself," HaShen will bless us with healthy and happy relationships.

Moral: The key to success in our family relationships lies in our intention to fulfill the Mitzvah of "Love your friends as you love yourself."

Application: Envision the love and warmth that Avraham Avinu held in his heart for each and every person. Transpose the Avraham's love to your heart. When extending love and help to your family members, have in mind that you are fulfilling the Mitzvah of "Love your friend as you love yourself" --  and receive HaShem's blessings for family peace, happiness, and joy.
