This Too Will Pass \ The Sages of Israel D'var Torah: Once King Solomon asked his minster to find for him a ring that would "make him happy when he is sad, and sad when he is happy." King Solomon did not believe that such a ring existed. His intention was to teach his minister a lesson in humility. Unaware, that the king was testing him, the faithful minister was determined to succeed. After a prolonged search, the minister found a ring that was engraved with the words, "This too will pass." Immediately, the minister realized that he had found the answer to the king's challenge. Upon seeing the ring, King Solomon beamed with delight at the brilliant message of the ring. He place the ring on his finger and wore for the rest of his life!
Moral: Avoid being overly prideful during good times because the good times could slip away, especially if a person is too smug. Conversely, don't let troubles get you down because HaShem could easily transform them into good times, especially if the person keeps his faith in HaShem.
Application: Envision the joy of King Solomon when he saw the ring that was engraved with the words, "This too will pass." See him place the ring on his finger, as if it was a precious diamond. Whenever he had good fortune, he kept his ego in check by looking at the ring, "This too will pass." Whenever he had hardship he kept his spirits up by looking at the ring and reminding himself, "This too will pass." |
