How to Give Good Advice \ Insight for Purim

D'var Torah: When Queen Vashti refused to comply with King Achashverush's request to appear at his party, Haman advised the king to execute Vashti. Haman's advice to kill Vashti was motivated from his own self-interest. He wanted to get rid of Vashti for three reasons. Firstly, Vashti couldn't stand Haman (he was obnoxious) and frequently slapped him in the face with her slipper; secondly, she didn't invite Haman's wife (she was just as obnoxious as her husband) to her party; and thirdly, Haman wanted to get Vashti out of the way so his daughter (who was also obviously obnoxious) could marry the king. The ulterior motives that pushed Haman to kill Vashti served to cause his own downfall. As a result of Vashti's death, the king chose Esther as his new queen. Esther alerted Achashverush to Haman's evil plans, and the king sentenced him to be hung on the gallows that he had prepared for Mordecai the Tzadik.

Moral: Advice based on ulterior motives and self-interest usually backfires. Sound advice based on care, wisdom, and good intentions brings success both to the advisor as well as the friend seeking advice.

Application: When a friend seeks your advice, give him the same advice that you would take for yourself.  Dismiss any self-interest and focus only on giving him the advice that would best serve his benefit.

The Salant Foundation is currently looking for a Shul or community to partner with us in sharing the merit of the unique and important Salant Kollel. There are practical and easy ways (such as adoptakollel.org) to create a special mutual relationship between the Kollel and a Shul or community. If you think your Shul or community or workplace might want to participate in supporting the Salant Kollel, please contact Rabbi Zvi Miller at salantorg@gmail.com, and we will discuss how to implement your idea. Thank you!
