SF - The Torah is Sweet as Honey to My Soul \ Parashat Vayakel

The Torah is Sweet as Honey to My Soul

D'var Torah: "Moshe gathered the whole congregation of the Children of Israel" (Shemot 35:1). Moshe Rabenu ascended Mount Sinai on the sixth of Sivan and stayed there for forty days without eating or drinking. How did  Moshe Rabenu survive without food or water? Moshe's soul delighted in the great spiritual pleasures of Torah wisdom and closeness to HaShem. His soul's pleasure was so intense that it sustained his body, just as effectively as a person who is sustained by material food. Even more amazingly, Moshe merited to be in this state of spiritual bliss, without eating any food, for one hundred and twenty days! Moshe Rabenu stood on Mount Sinai from the sixth of Nissan till Yom Kippur.  The day after Yom Kippur,  "Moshe gathered the whole congregation of the Children of Israel," and instructed them to build the sanctuary.

Moral: Just as honey is sweet to the tongue, the wisdom of Torah is sweet to the soul.

Application: Reflect on the verse, "Eat honey, my son, for it is good and sweet, so too, wisdom and knowledge is sweet to your soul; if you have wisdom you have acquired eternity and your hope will never be removed." (Proverbs 24). Eat something sweet, like honey or chocolate, and say, "Just like the honey is sweet to my tongue, the Torah is even sweeter to my soul."
(Based on the commentary of Rabenu Bachya, and Rabbi Mordecai Goldstein)
