Korach accused Moshe of favoritism, claiming it was unjust that Moshe appointed his own brother, Aaron, to be the High Priest. Backed by a few hundred respected leaders, Korach led what ultimately became a futile rebellion. On the surface, Korach believed he was standing up for truth and justice. But beneath it all, his true motivation was jealousy—particularly because Moshe had appointed a younger relative of Korah to a leadership position.
It’s important to recognize that Korach was no ordinary troublemaker. He was a wise and spiritually elevated man. The jealousy that fueled his actions was deep-seated and subconscious—so much so that he didn’t even realize it was driving him. Still, this raises an important question: If Korach didn’t consciously know he was acting out of jealousy, why is he held responsible?
The answer lies in the responsibility each of us has to look inward. Korach was expected to examine his heart and question what was truly motivating him. Had he done so, he might have realized the jealousy that lurked beneath his righteous-sounding arguments.
Our inner emotions—especially those we're unaware of—can quietly shape our actions. By acknowledging the powerful influence of our feelings, we can learn to pause, reflect, and examine our true motivations. This kind of self-awareness is what helps us act with integrity. As King Solomon beautifully wrote, "My son, give Me your heart." When we dedicate our hearts fully to HaShem, we are better able to keep our emotions in check and stay aligned with what is right.
Today: Picture the moment Korach stood against Moshe and how it ended in disgrace. His downfall was caused not by an obvious misdeed, but by unexamined emotions. Let his story be a reminder: Resolve to give your heart completely to HaShem. With this inner commitment, you’ll find protection from costly mistakes and open yourself to a life of peace, clarity, and spiritual joy. (Based on the teachings of the Saba Kadisha of Kelm)
