When Klal Yisrael went out to battle against Midian, they were not merely facing a physical enemy, but a spiritual one as well. Among their opponents stood Balaam, the infamous sorcerer who had previously attempted to curse the Jewish people. This time, he employed powerful sorcery and black magic, enabling himself and the Midianite kings to literally rise into the air, hovering beyond the reach of ordinary combat. Their supernatural elevation symbolized not only physical escape but a presumed spiritual superiority—an attempt to dominate through dark forces.
But then came Pinchas, the grandson of Aharon HaKohen, wielding not a sword, but a holy artifact—the Tzitz, the golden forehead plate of the Kohen Gadol. Engraved upon it was the sacred Name of HaShem. When he lifted it and directed its radiance toward the airborne sorcerers, a miraculous transformation occurred. Confronted with the sanctity and Divine power of HaShem’s Name, their magical flight was abruptly halted. The dark forces sustaining them were shattered in an instant. Balaam and the Midianite kings came crashing down to the earth, powerless before the holiness of the Divine.
The lesson is clear: The ultimate victory of the Jewish people does not stem from military might, tactical prowess, or worldly strategy. Rather, it flows from the spiritual strength embedded in the performance of mitzvos and the sanctity of lives lived in accordance with Torah.
Today: The next time you perform a mitzvah—whether lighting Shabbos candles, giving tzedakah, speaking words of Torah, or treating another person with kindness—pause for a moment. Reflect on the inherent holiness contained within that action. Envision how each mitzvah, no matter how small it may seem, contributes to a vast reservoir of spiritual energy. And recognize that the combined power of Klal Yisrael’s mitzvos has the capacity to protect, uplift, and ultimately defeat even the most threatening of adversaries. (Based on Rashi to Parshas Matos)
Picture Yaacov Avinu arriving at Lavan’s house with nothing but the clothes on his back. Despite Lavan’s repeated attempts to cheat him, Yaacov ultimately emerged with tremendous wealth and prosperity—all through HaShem’s blessing. Now imagine HaShem’s blessings flowing into every corner of your life—your health, your livelihood, your relationships—filling you with joy and abundance.
