HaShem instructed Moshe to "take revenge" against Midian for the evil they dealt to Klal Yisrael. The Midianites tricked and trapped Klal Yisrael to fall into immorality and idol worship. In his great wisdom, Moshe decided to appoint Pinchas to lead the troops, rather than take an active role in the battle, . He reasoned that his successor, Yehoshuah, would fight thirty-one battles. However, if Moshe fought this battle, it would have been his only one. Since he was the Father of all the Prophets, his one victory, in contrast to the many victories of Yehoshuah, would be construed as slight to him and the honor of Torah. Rather than just looking at the here and now, Moshe's decisions and judgements considered the far-reaching ramifications of each action.  Acquire a global, long-range view of your actions. Consider how it will affect and impact others now and in the future. This contemplation will give you insight into making a Kiddush HaShem!
