SF - Why HaShem Protected Israel from Bilam's Curse

In this weeks' Torah reading, Bilam and Balak attack Klal Yisrael with two evil schemes. Firstly, Bilam tries to work a curse against Klal Yisrael, but HaShem intervenes and converts his words to blessings. Secondly, Bilam advises the Moabite women to entice the men of Israel to sin. Unfortunately, many men fell to immorality and idol worship, which resulted in a deadly plague. Why did HaShem protect Klal Yisrael from Bilam's evil curses, but not from falling to the lowly sin of indecency? In light of the fact that Klal Yisrael were helpless to stop Bilam's curses, HaShem protected them. Whereas, despite the great test of earthly enticement, they were responsible -- and capable -- of controlling themselves from giving in to the whims of wanton desire.

HaShem protects us from hidden spiritual threats. Whereas, in situations where the battle is an our hands, the holiness of the Torah gives us the capacity to preserve our spirituality by mastering over our earthly desires.

Envision yourself mastering over all negative acts, thoughts, and speech. Reflect on the truth that HaShem gave you the Torah and endowed you with the inner strength and courage to rule over inappropriate earthly desires. Be inspired by knowing that the more you prevail over your bodily influences and challenges, the more you will purify your body, sanctify your soul, and discover true inner joy in this world and the eternal World to Come.
