A Prayer From the Heart
Chanah, the Prophetess, was childless for many years. Once, at the time of the festival, she went to the Temple and prayed with a broken heart and copious tears. HaShem answered her prayers and granted her a son, who became Shmuel HaNavi.
Yet, a question arises. Elkanah, Chanah's husband, had a practice of bringing his family to Jerusalem to observe the festivals, year by year. If so, Chanah had made the pilgrimage to Jerusalem many times over the years. What was different about this year, that inspired her to pray so fervently for a child?
Elkanah was a great tzadik. Chanah knew that he was praying for her, his beloved wife. Up to this year, she relied on his incomparable merit, that HaShem would bless her with a son.
However, this year he said to her, "Aren't I better to you than ten sons?" She understood from his words that he gave up hope that she would ever have a child! She realized it was now all up to her!
This awakening inspired her to stand before Hashem at the holy Temple and plead with a broken heart for a child. Her sincere supplications opened the gates of Heavenly mercy and she received the blessing, she so desperately desired.
The survival of Klal Yisrael depends on Jewish education.
Just as Chanah gave her whole heart to pray to HaShem, we need to give our fullest effort to uphold Torah and the continuity of Klal Yisrael.
Have you given your whole heart to strengthen Jewish education?
