The Thirteen Attributes of Divine Compassion
On Yom Kippur we recite the "Thirteen Attributes" of Divine Compassion in order to awaken HaShem's mercy upon our community and all Klal Yisrael. Below you will find a list of these attributes and concise explanation of each one.
1. "HaShem" -- The mercy of HaShem that extends to His creations before sin.
2. "HaShem" -- The mercy of HaSHem that extends to His creations after they sin and then repent.
3. "El" -- Divine compassion.
4. "Rachum" -- Like a merciful father, who watches over his son so that he does not fall.
5. "Chanun" -- He shows mercy to one who has fallen and cannot pick himself back up.
6. "Erech Apayim" -- HaShem mercifully has patience and is not quick to punish because He hopes that, perhaps, they will repent.
7. "Rav Chesed" -- Pertains to those who need HaShem's kindness because they don't have so much merit.
8. "Emes" -- HaShem is faithful to pay good reward to those who fulfill His will.
9. "Notzer Chesed L'Alaphim" -- HaShem rewards every act of kindness for two thousand generations.
10. "Nosei Avon" -- He bears intentional sins.
11. "Peshah" -- He bears rebellious sins.
12. "Chatas" -- He bears unintentional sins.
13. "Nakey" -- HaShem cleanses away the impurity of the sin of those who repent.
On Erev Yom Kippur, grasp the incomparable merit of kindness and support the Salant Foundation.
Just as you show mercy, so too, HaShem will bless you with His blessings of mercy for two thousand generations, or forty thousand years!
What a great way to start the New Year.
Thank You!
