SF - A Prayer for Peace

A Prayer for Peace

"Rabbi Chaninam the deputy Kohen Gadol says: Pray for the peace of the government." (Avos 3:2)

The ideal expressed by this teaching is to pray for world peace and to empathize with the suffering of others. One of the defining characteristics of a tzadik is his love and care for all of HaShem's creations. For example, King David even prayed for his enemies when they were ill! When the governments are in a state of peace, then peace prevails in the world. In this light, the Torah advices us to pray for peace of the governments.

Lesson: It is appropriate to care about the welfare of mankind. Therefore, it is fitting to pray for all of humanity to live peacefully together.

Visualization: Envision all the nations of the world being in peace both domestically as well as with each other. Pray for the peace of Israel as well as for the peace of the nations of the world.
(Based on the commentary of Rabenu Yonah)
