The Importance of Dedication
"Yehoshua bin Nun did not desist from within the tent of wisdom" (Devarim).
There were many great men living in the time of Moshe Rabenu. Amongst them were Pinchas, Elazar, as well as the the seventy elders who attained Prophecy. Nevertheless, Moshe transferred the Torah to Yehoshuah, alone. Yehoshuah was unique because he dedicated himself unceasingly to the Torah from the days of his youth. Additionally, he established a good name for himself.
Lesson: When Moshe chose his successor, he did not search for the greatest genius, rather, he based his choice on the two criteria that would best serve the transmission of Torah. Specifically, total dedication to Torah and virtuous character traits. Yehoshuah, alone, excelled in these two holy attributes.
Visualization: Envision Yehoshuah arriving early in the morning to the Beit Midrash and studying Torah with uninterrupted enthusiasm. See him refining his personality traits and attaining an impeccable reputation for integrity. Be inspired by Yehoshuah to strengthen your dedication both to Torah study as well as attaining personal excellence. (Based on the commentary of Rashi to Pirkei Avot 1:1) |
