SF - The Secret of Success \ Duties of the Heart

The Secret of Success
 \ Duties of the Heart

D'var Torah:  "HaShem grants us the power of our intellect. Amongst the many wonders of the intellect, it has the capacity to discern the meaning of things which are hidden from the simple perception of our senses." For instance, at first glance, we would assume that water, which is soft, could never cut into hard stone.  However, through observance and contemplation we come to understand that water continuously dripping on a rock, for a long period of time, will eventually carve a hole in the hard stone. This enlightens us with the knowledge that making a daily effort to attain our goal, will eventually help us to transform our nature. Therefore, making a consistent effort over time to achieve our objective, will eventually pave the way to success.

Moral: The human intellect has the power to grasp life-changing concepts from natural occurrences. In addition, man has the acuity to abstract the lesson, apply it to himself, and effectively change his nature.

Application: Envision Rabbi Akiva sitting near a well and noticing how drops of water carved a hole into the stone. Reflect on his thinking process: if the soft water can carve into the hard rock, certainly the holy Torah will penetrate my heart which is flesh and blood." This insight propelled Rabbi Akiva to become one of the greatest Torah scholars and tzadikim in the history of our people. Apply this lesson to yourself: keep to your daily agenda and attain your most worthy goals.
