It is only natural for someone who is in love with a woman to express his feelings through song. If human love can inspire such songs, then surely our love for our Creator, which surpasses all other forms of love, should lead us to sing with joy and devotion! Our songs of praise should flow from the deepest recesses of our hearts, overflowing with the love we feel for Hashem.
Throughout Jewish history, many great figures expressed their love for Hashem through song—Moshe Rabbeinu, B'nei Yisrael, Miriam, Devorah, Yehoshua, the sons of Korach, King David, and King Solomon, all sang with divine inspiration (ruach hakodesh).
As King David wrote in Tehillim (Psalms) 45:1, "My heart overflows with a goodly theme; I address my verses to the king." In Tehillim 105:2, he calls us to "Sing to Hashem, sing praises to Him, tell of all His wondrous works." King Solomon, in his Shir HaShirim (Song of Songs), speaks of the divine love with the words "The Song of Songs, which is Solomon’s" (1:1), and the Midrash interprets this as referring to "the king, who masters peace." In Mishlei (Proverbs) 8:9, we are reminded, "In your love, you will always sing," highlighting that our love for Hashem is a constant source of song.
Our sages, such as Rabbi Yehudah HaLevi, Rabbi Yehudah HaChasid, and Rabbi Avraham Ibn Ezra, each expressed their yearning and love for Hashem through song, reflecting a deep spiritual longing that transcends the physical world.
Today: Take a moment to reflect on the love you have for Hashem. Choose a verse that resonates with your heart, and sing a song of devotion to Him, expressing your deepest affection and reverence.
