When HaShem revealed Himself at Mount Sinai, He was accompanied by twenty-four thousand angels. Upon witnessing this awe-inspiring sight, Klal Yisrael cried out, "If only we could also attain such closeness to HaShem!" In response, HaShem said, "Because you long to be like the angels, I will fulfill your desire."
At that moment, HaShem revealed His deep love for His people and instructed Moshe, "Arrange them in encampments around Me." This is alluded to in Shir HaShirim (2:4): "He brought me into the banquet hall, and His banner over me was love."
The key to spiritual elevation lies in our yearning for closeness to HaShem. When Klal Yisrael expressed this longing, HaShem opened the gates of love and allowed them to experience profound intimacy with the Divine.
Today: So too for us: awaken your heart to draw near to HaShem—toward His goodness, His light, His holiness, and His joy. In return, HaShem will draw you close and welcome you into His exalted Presence. Aspire to the lofty spiritual heights of the angels, and you will indeed "flourish like a palm tree in the courtyards of HaShem." (Based on Midrash Tanchuma, Bamidbar)
