There was once a ladder with ten evenly spaced rungs. Though each rung was identical in size and purpose, the top rung began to feel superior. Looking down arrogantly at the rungs below, it boasted, “I have been chosen to stand above all of you. Surely, I must be the greatest and most important!” Just then, a passerby overheard the self-important declaration. Without a word, he simply turned the ladder around. Instantly, the top rung was brought to the bottom, and the lowest rung was elevated to the highest point. Now humbled by its sudden fall, the once-proud rung regretted its arrogance. Meanwhile, the newly elevated rung, remembering what had just happened, took care not to let pride take root, lest it too suffer the same fate.
This parable reflects the dynamics of wealth and status. From our earthly perspective, it may appear that success and prosperity are earned solely through our own efforts. But the truth is deeper: every cent we receive is a decree from Heaven. It is HaShem, and HaShem alone, who decides who will be wealthy and who will face financial struggle.
Today: If you have been blessed with wealth, never forget that it is a gift from HaShem—not a product of your own greatness. By keeping this truth in mind, you will safeguard yourself from arrogance and help ensure that your blessing remains a blessing. If you are not wealthy, remind yourself that your situation is not a reflection of your worth, but rather the will of Heaven. Accepting this truth with faith and humility brings spiritual dignity and inner peace. Based on a parable from the Ben Ish Chai (Mashal V’Nimshal)
