SF - # The Rising Flame

Refuah Shleimah to Esther Shifra bas Rivka

“And it came to pass when Rachel gave birth to Yosef” (Bereishis 30:28).

Our Sages teach that Yosef became the spiritual opposite of Esav. As Ovadiah says: “The house of Yosef shall be a flame, and the house of Esav like straw.”

Yosef’s name means “increase.” His greatness was his steady, daily growth in holiness. Esav, whose name hints to “finished,” felt no need to improve. His complacency left him spiritually stagnant, while Yosef’s constant striving made him a rising flame.

This was also the secret of Yaakov’s strength—his conviction that spiritual growth never ends. Each small step of self-refinement increased his inner light, enabling him to overcome the negativity represented by Esav.

Picture Yaakov adding a little more goodness and purity each day, while Esav remains unmoving. Yaakov’s steady effort becomes a flame that outshines Esav’s stagnation.

Today: The message is simple:

Growing just a little every day creates the inner strength to rise above all challenges.

(Based on Rav Dov Yaffe on the Shem MiShmuel)

SF - # Seeing Every Blessing as a Gift From Hashem

Refuah Shleimah to Esther Shifra bas Rivka

Yaacov Avinu designated a special tent for focused spiritual reflection. There, in quiet and solitude, he contemplated the Creator and steadily deepened his awareness of His existence, His power, and His boundless kindness. As Yaacov expanded his recognition of the awe-inspiring Creator, the honor of HaShem was elevated and sanctified in the world.

Reflecting on the Creator is the essential path to truly perceive His presence, His might, and His goodness. Such contemplation is a primary way a person can bring greater honor to HaShem and illuminate His holiness in the world.

Today: Set aside time each day in a peaceful place, free from noise and distraction, to reflect on your compassionate Creator. Even a few quiet moments of sincere contemplation can open the heart, strengthen faith, and increase awareness of His honor, benevolence, and holiness.

(Based on the commentary of the Seforno to Bereishis)

SF - # Seeing Every Blessing as a Gift From Hashem

Refuah Shleimah to Esther Shifra bas Rivka

When Leah Imeinu gave birth to her fourth son, the Torah tells us, “She named him Yehudah.” The Talmud teaches that Leah was the first person in history to offer explicit thanks to HaShem. But this seems surprising—surely our holy Patriarchs and Matriarchs expressed gratitude to HaShem before her. What, then, was unique about Leah’s expression of thanks?

Leah understood that Yaacov would father twelve sons, and since he had four wives, she initially assumed that each wife was “entitled” to three children. However, when her fourth son was born, she experienced a spiritual awakening. She realized that no one is entitled to anything—not even to the blessings that seem “expected” or “deserved.” Every child is a pure gift from HaShem, lovingly bestowed according to His will alone.

This realization filled her with such profound gratitude that she named her son Yehudah, from the word hoda’ah—thankfulness. Each time she called his name, she would remind herself that every blessing in her life was a divine gift, not something owed to her. Leah thus became the first person to express gratitude not for an extraordinary miracle, but for the simple, ongoing kindnesses that HaShem showers upon us constantly.

We, too, are surrounded every moment by HaShem’s gifts—our lives, our families, our health, our intelligence, our ability to learn Torah, our senses, our opportunities, and the countless unseen miracles that sustain us each day. When we recognize that nothing is taken for granted, everything becomes a reason to give thanks.

Today: Identify ten gifts that HaShem is granting you right now. Write them down. Reflect on them throughout the day, and let your heart overflow with gratitude. The more we notice HaShem’s gifts, the more we naturally thank Him for His endless goodness.

(Based on the commentary of Rav Yaacov Yoseph Herman)
