| “And the life of Sarah was one hundred years, and twenty years, and seven years.”
Our Sages comment: “When she was one hundred, she was like twenty regarding sin. Just as a twenty-year-old has no sin, being exempt from Heavenly judgment, so too, when Sarah was one hundred, she was without sin. All the years of Sarah’s life were equally good.” At twenty, a person possesses vitality and strength, yet lacks the depth and maturity that come with age. In old age, one attains wisdom and understanding, but often lacks youthful vigor. Sarah Imeinu was the exception. At twenty, she had already achieved spiritual enlightenment and purity of heart, harmonizing her wisdom with boundless acts of kindness. At one hundred, she retained not only her righteousness and insight but also her youthful energy and enthusiasm to perform good deeds.
From Sarah we learn that within us lies the power to transcend our limitations and refine our human nature. We can live so that all the days of our lives—youth and old age alike—are filled with genuine goodness and holiness.
Today: Follow in the sacred path of our matriarch Sarah. Fill every day with purpose and goodness. In youth, seek to cultivate wisdom and maturity to elevate your acts of kindness. In later years, let your understanding and experience overflow with compassion, thoughtfulness, and good deeds. (Based on Rashi to Chumash and Be’er Yosef)
