| “And HaShem appeared to Avraham in the plains of Mamre, as he sat at the entrance of his tent in the heat of the day” (Bereishis 18:1). What is the deeper meaning of the phrase “in the heat of the day”? The Torah compares Avraham Avinu to the sun — whose light and warmth illuminate the world. Likewise, Avraham’s boundless kindness and goodness radiated to all humanity. Thus, the Torah describes him as sitting “in the heat of the day,” for Avraham’s spiritual light shone with the same brilliance and warmth as the sun itself.
Avraham positioned himself at the entrance of his tent, attentively watching for travelers to welcome. His heart overflowed with a burning desire to offer them comfort — shade from the sun, refreshing water, and a nourishing meal. His loving-kindness enveloped all who came near, glowing with warmth, compassion, and joy.
Avraham Avinu’s kindness and gracious spirit warmed the hearts of all people, just as the golden sun warms and brightens the earth.
Imagine Avraham Avinu inviting you into his tent. Feel his warmth as he greets you with gentleness, care, and respect. Sense the radiance of his love filling the world with compassion and light. Now, take that love into your own heart — and let your words and deeds shine with kindness, illuminating the lives of others. (Based on the commentary of the Kli Yakar on the Torah.)
