SF - # The Honor of Patience

“Rabbi Eliezer says: ‘Let the honor of your friend be as dear to you as your own. And do not be easily angered.’” (Avos 2:10)

A generous and enduring measure of patience is the foundation for truly honoring your friend. Without patience, even small irritations can lead to words or actions that cause offense, wounding the bond of friendship. When one becomes easily angered, respect inevitably diminishes; anger is, in essence, a breach of honor.

Patience, however, preserves dignity — both yours and your friend’s. It allows love and understanding to flourish, even in moments of tension. Therefore, resolve to safeguard the honor of your friend by cultivating calmness and restraint, and by treating his feelings with the same care and reverence you desire for your own.
