An Ancient Formula of Love
Like an ancient light shining from Gan Eden, our holy sages revealed a precious secret about the relationship between love and humility. The awakening of love in our hearts for other people effectively subdues the ego. The more we love others, the more humility we attain. The wider we expand our circle of love to include all mankind, the more our hearts will be purified of all arrogance.
Lesson: Love is letting go of one's ego in order to open your heart to care about another person. The joy and goodness of love is the remedy for all the negative characteristics of conceit.
Visualization: Envision your heart filled with love for family members, your friends, and your community. See the circle of your love increase in intensity and in size until it embraces all of mankind. Your heart is healed of all ego and filled with love, humility, and kindness.

Once, Rabbi Yisrael Salanter's student approached him and said, "If I had the mind of a genius, the heart of a saint, and outstanding character traits -- then, I could become a great Rabbi."
Rabbi Yisrael responded, "With your mind, your heart, and your character traits you can become a great Rabbi!"
Rabbi Yisrael dedicated his life to encourage people to strive for personal excellence. To this end he launched the Mussar Movement, providing guidance, techniques, and wisdom on how to develop good and pleasant character traits.
He had tremendous impact on the world and his message resonates today just as clearly as it did one hundred and fifty years ago.
