The Powerful Prayer of Moshe
When Klal Yisrael found disfavor due to the blunder of the "golden calf," Moshe was overwhelmed with empathy for his people. He begged HaShem, "If you don't forgive Klal Yisrael, strike my name from the Torah! Because people will say, "Moshe lacked the merit to awaken HaShem's mercy to forgive Klal Yisrael!" At the time Klal Yisrael incurred such accountability, Moshe knew that HaShem would not be so quick to grant them forgiveness. Therefore, he pleaded to be spared the embarrassent of bearing the reputation of the leader who failed his people. Upon hearing Moshe's raw expression of love and empathy for Klal Yisrael, HaShem's mercy was awakened. Lesson: Just as Moshe could not bear the blame of Klal Yisrael's disgrace, so too, HaShem could not bear the anguish of Moshe's disgrace. When our love for other people inspires us to sacrifice our most cherished treasure; HaShem's compassion, forgiveness, and salvation is awakened.
