The Secret of a Good Heart
"Rabbi Yochanon asked his students, "What is the straight path that a person should choose?' Rabbi Elazar replied, 'A good heart.'" (Avos 2:9)
Rabbi Yochanon's question was based on the understanding that there is one character trait that is the key to acquiring all the other character traits. Rabbi Elazar replied, "A good heart." He is referring to the virtue of patience. A master of patience in never short-tempered. He distances himself from anger by answering insult with a gentle reply. Even if someone harms him, he shows tolerance and does not utter a negative remark.
Lesson: The virtue of enduring patience, even in the face of offense, is the key to acquiring all the other good character traits.
Visualization: Envision the pleasant countenance of Hillel the Elder, a righteous man who had infinite patience. See how his mastery of patience builds the foundation of all good character traits. Make a commitment to grow a little more patient each day -- and acquire the key to attain excellence of character. (Based on the commentary of Rav Yonah to Pirkei Avos)
