Become a Fitting Vessel to Receive the Torah \ Days of the Omer D'var Torah: HaShem gave Klal Yisrael the holy Torah seven weeks after freeing us from the Egyptian bondage. Why didn't we receive the Torah immediately upon our exodus from Egypt? HaShem wanted to give us the Torah when we were healthy and strong. Since, many people were injured due to the brutal slavery, HaShem sent angels to heal their wounds. Yet, since the angels healed the people in a second's time, why did we have to wait for seven weeks to receive the Torah? Before receiving the Torah, we also needed to be spiritually fit. The angels mission did not include the fixing of our souls. Rather, each individual, with HaShem's help, was responsible to heal his own inner being and attain good character traits. Moral: The development of pleasing character traits is a prerequisite to receive the Torah. Each person is capable of perfecting his inner being. Application: Envision Klal Yisrael in the desert during the fifty day period before they received the Torah. Imagine Moshe Rabenu informing them that they must attain purity of the soul in order to be worthy of receiving the Torah. Reflect on how each person consciously improved himself, ascending one level of holiness each day. On the fiftieth day see how each person shines with the inner goodness required to receive the Torah. Make an effort to work on yourself each day and become a fitting vessel to receive the holy Torah. (Midrash Raba as explained by the Beit Avraham) |
