One Man, One Heart \ The Festival of Shavuot
D'var Torah: When Rabbi Eliezer took ill, his students came to visit him. They said,"Our Rabbi, please instruct us on the paths of life so that we merit a share in the World to Come." Rabbi Eliezer answered, "Be careful to honor your friends." Rabbi Eliezer revealed to his disciples that when the students of Torah are united in friendship their Torah learning is valid. Therefore, in response to his students request that he show them the paths to the World to Come, he shared with them the secret of true Torah. If you will honor your friends you will be unified, and your Torah will be pleasing to HaShem. Then you will merit a share in the World to Come.
Moral: Unity amongst Klal Yisrael is a necessary condition for our Torah to be valid in the eyes of HaShem. Respect for each other is the key to attain unity. With proper respect and unity, our Torah will be pleasing to HaShem, and we will earn a share in the World to Come.
Application: Envision Klal Yisrael gathered around Mount Sinai, intent on receiving the Torah. See them attain a perfect state of respect, love, and unity. They are like, "One man, with one heart." May we all respect each other so that we have the required unity to fulfill the Torah, and earn a share in the World to Come. (Based on Brachos 28b. and Sichos of Rav Nosson Wactfogel) |
