SF - The Ideal of Infinite Compassion \ Parashat Toldot

Dedicated in honor of Morris Hidary

The Ideal of Infinite Compassion \ Parashat Toldot

D'var Torah: "When Esau heard his father's words he cried out a great and bitter cry, and he said to his father, bless me too, O my father" (Bereishis 27:34).  Esau cried out in pain when he learned that he lost the blessing of the first born to Yaacov, his younger brother. As a result of Esau's anguish, generations later, Haman threatened to destroy Klal Yisrael, and Mordecai "cried out in a great and bitter cry." Yet, since Yaacov's seizing the blessing was ordained by HaShem, why should Yaacov's descendants suffer for Esau's great cry? Even though Esau's wickedness disqualified him from receiving the blessing, nevertheless, Yaacov should have felt a little more compassion for Esau's loss and shed a few more tears for his brother.

Moral: The holy attribute of a compassionate heart encompasses infinite, never-ending compassion for all of HaShem's creations, regardless of their spiritual status. If a person lacks feeling for his fellow's anguish, he might be subject to future consequences for his insensitivity to the pain of his brethren.

Application: Envision Yaacov's dilemma upon realizing that he must seize the blessings from his brother Esau. Imagine HaShem looking into Yaacov's heart and seeing that he lacked a small measure of compassion for his brother. See Haman rise up against Klal Yisrael, causing Mordecai, Yaacov's descendant to let out a great cry. Open your heart to empathize with all of HaShem's creations.
