The King is Close Once a king was lost in the forest, far away from the royal palace. He met a peasant and told him that he was the king. The poor man took the king to his hut and fed him a simple green salad. He encouraged the king and assured him that soon he would be restored to the throne. The king felt great appreciation and affection for his new friend and his loyal support. Lesson: During the three week period marking ninth of Av, we mourn the destruction of the Temple. It is as if HaShem is in exile and living amongst us. Whoever so desires can reach out and come close to HaShem. Even if we can only offer the King a "simple green salad," our care and compassion for Him awakens the King's love, blessings, and friendship for us. App: Reflect on the fact that HaShem is in exile and that His Presence is amongst us. Pray sincerely for the rebuilding of the Temple and the restoration of the Shechinah (the Divine Presence). Sense HaShem surround you with His holiness, love, and blessings. (Based on the writings of the Maggid M'Mezrich, cited by Rav Shalom Perl) to view the Salant Mussar Library Collection
