The Spiritual Journeys of Klal Yisrael
"These are the voyages of B'nai Yisrael...and Moshe wrote their departures to their journeys according to HaShem, and these are their journeys according to their departures." (BaMidbar 33:1)
The first part of the verse reveals that HaShem elevated the entire nation to a state of spiritual purification, i.e., "their journeys according to HaShem." Even though they descended into a low level in Egypt, HaShem purified and redeemed them in His great compassion. The second part of the verse, "according to their departures," reveals the effort that each person made to attain personal excellence. That is, the specific level of goodness that each person acquired by means of his own actions, dedication, and trials.
Lesson: There are two factors that determine the elevated status of each soul. The first is the gift of holiness and purity that HaShem grants equally to the entire Klal Yisrael. Secondly, is the elevated status that each soul achieves from his individual deeds, commitment, and inner perefection.
App: Envision that you are traversing the holy path of the forty-two journeys that Klal Yisrael made in the wilderness. Take advantage of the spiritual strengths that HaShem naturally grants you, and elevate yourself to even higher levels through your dedication to come closer to HaShem, day by day.
