SF - # A Calm Home - A Blessed Life

Refuah Shleimah to Esther Shifra bas Rivka

In preparation for his encounter with Esav, Yaacov divided his family into two camps. At that moment, he reflected on HaShem’s abundant kindness: “I crossed the Jordan with nothing but my staff, and now I have become two camps.” But didn’t Yaacov already know—before dividing them—that HaShem had blessed him with a large and growing family?

Rather, the Torah teaches us something deeper about human nature. We naturally experience our family as one unified whole, a single entity. Only when Yaacov physically separated his household did he gain a new perspective. Seeing them as two smaller groups allowed him to appreciate more clearly the value of each individual soul within the larger family.

A family’s strength lies both in the harmony of the entire unit and in the unique greatness of each individual member.

Today: Picture Yaacov arranging his twelve children, his two wives, and his two concubines into two distinct camps. As he looks at the smaller groups, his awareness opens. He sees each child—Reuven, Shimon, Yehudah, Levi, and all the others—with renewed clarity and warmth. He recognizes the distinct gifts, personalities, and spiritual potential of every member of his family. Through this, he reaches a deeper appreciation: both for the beauty of the family as a whole and for the irreplaceable worth of each individual.

May the souls who left this world be remembered for a blessing.
