| The Rambam writes that “the Mitzvah of lighting the Chanukah lights is a very beloved Mitzvah.” Since he does not use this expression for any other Mitzvah, we are compelled to explore what makes the kindling of the Chanukah Menorah uniquely precious.
The Torah teaches that HaShem cherishes Klal Yisrael as His children. The Talmud asks: Does this fatherly love depend on our obedience to the Torah, or is HaShem’s love unconditional—extending to us even when we fall short? The conclusion is striking: HaShem’s love for Klal Yisrael is absolute and unwavering, regardless of our spiritual state.
This truth becomes especially evident during the era of the Greek oppression. At that time, the majority of Klal Yisrael succumbed to Hellenistic influence and did not repent. Only a small minority, led by the Chashmonaim, remained steadfast in their devotion. Yet despite the widespread rebellion, HaShem performed the extraordinary miracles of Chanukah. These miracles revealed His boundless, unconditional love for His people. Because Chanukah shines with the revelation of HaShem’s unwavering affection for Klal Yisrael, the Mitzvah of lighting the Menorah is indeed “very beloved.”
Just as parents love their children without conditions, so too HaShem—our compassionate Father—loves us with an unbreakable love.
Today: As you light the Chanukah candles, contemplate this timeless truth. Reflect on the miracles HaShem performed even when most of Klal Yisrael was immersed in foreign practices. Close your eyes, open your heart, and feel the steady, unending love and mercy that HaShem extends to you. Rejoice in the knowledge that His love surrounds you every moment of your life.
