SF - # The Secret of Chanukah's Holiness

On Chanukah, we recite the Shehechiyanu blessing specifically over the lighting of the Menorah. On all other festivals, however, the Shehechiyanu is said over the sanctity of the day itself, independent of any particular mitzvah. This difference reflects a profound idea. The holiness of the other festivals is inherent in the day, established by the Torah. In contrast, the days of Chanukah possess no intrinsic sanctity. Instead, their holiness is created through our performance of the mitzvah—lighting the Chanukah candles, which themselves are endowed with holiness. Therefore, the Shehechiyanu is recited over the lights.

The holiness of Chanukah’s days is brought into the world through the mitzvah of lighting the Menorah. When our souls are stirred by the radiance and holiness of the Chanukah lights, we naturally express joy through the Shehechiyanu blessing.
