“I am Yoseph your brother—is my father still alive?” (Bereishis 45:3) When Yoseph revealed himself to his brothers, his question seems unnecessary. They had already said that Yaacov was alive. Yet Yoseph was not asking for information—he was offering reassurance. The brothers stood in fear, realizing that the brother they had sold into slavery now held power over them. Yoseph sensed their dread and chose words of healing rather than blame. By asking, “Is my father still alive?” he touched the deepest bond they shared—their love for Yaacov Avinu. His message was clear: Let us make peace for our father’s sake. With a few gentle words, Yoseph healed a broken family.
