Go On the Good Path
The Talmud relates the following story. Once, a Rabbi hired workers to transport jugs of wine. Since, the workers were negligent and broke the jugs, the Rabbi withheld their wages in order to compensate for his loss. The workers approached Rav, a judge, and claimed, "He has withheld our wages and we have no money to buy food." Rav ruled that the Rabbi must pay the workers. He explained, "Due to their situation, you have an ethical obligation to pay them."
Lesson: Legal decisions are based on two criteria: the law and the ethical implications of applying the law to the particular case at hand.
App: Whenever "judging" others, keep in mind the words of King Solomon, "Go on the good path and keep to the ways of the righteous." (Based on Bava Metzia 83)
