Always Rely on HaShem's Mercy
Yoseph had prophetic dreams in which he saw he would become a king. Nevertheless, he felt that all the troubles that befell him indicated that he was unworthy of the prophecy to be fulfilled. In light of that, he relied on a human agency to free him from prison. He received an additional two years in jail for his lack of trust in HaShem. Why was he penalized for his humility in deeming himself unworthy? Regardless of his spiritual status, it was appropriate for him to trust in HaShem's infinite compassion to forgive him and rescue him from his plight.
Lesson: HaShem's infinite compassion is far greater than any sin. Therefore, if one considers himself unworthy of redemption, he is lacking faith in HaShem's endless mercy and forgiveness.
App: Never despair of HaShem's redemption, regardless of your past misdeeds. Place your heartfelt trust in HaShem's mercy and He will surely save you from your troubles. (Based on the teachings of Rav Yisrael Salanter, Even Yisrael)
