SF - The Right Response

The Right Response

Gideon lead Klal Yisrael to a miraculous victory over the Midianites. Although the Tribe of Ephraim was not summoned for the battle, they delivered the final blow when the enemy retreated into Ephraim's territory. Nevertheless, the Tribe of Ephraim felt slighted because Gideon did not call him to join the initial attack. Unbeknownst to Ephraim, Gideon was not able to get word to them because enemy troops had blocked the access route. Instead of making excuses, Gideon restored the Tribe of Ephraim's honor by expressing to them that their role in the victory was more important than his own.

Lesson: When a person is accused of slighting his friend, it is counterproductive to justify his actions. The best way to make peace is to reassure his friend that he truly values him and his contribution.

App: When your friend feels slighted do not react emotionally. Retain your poise and answer him with humility, wisdom, and encouragement.
