When Trouble Hits
When famine hit the land of Israel, Yitzchak relocated south to Gerar. Unfortunately, the locals harassed him and the king banished him from the land. Due to the pervasive famine Yitzchak did not know where he could find food for his family. Yitzchak was concerned that these relentless troubles meant that HaShem was no longer with him. At that instance, HaShem appeared to Yitzchak and told him "do not fear." HaShem's message was: Yitzchak, do not become despondent. Your troubles do not mean that you have fallen out of favor with Me.
Lesson: While hardship in life is a stimulus to improve ourselves, it does not mean that HaShem has abandoned us. Just the opposite! When man endures trouble, HaShem empathizes, loves, cares, and comes closer to us than ever before.
App: Do not interpret troubles as a sign that HaShem has distanced Himself from you. Rather, be confident that He knows your pain and surrounds you with new dimensions of compassion. (Based on the commentary of the Ohr HaChaim)
